Cox or Burns? That is the question. The answer is clear. Both. You can not continue to play just Cox when he is playing so badly. He is a 5th year senior and he is still throwing off of his back foot into triple coverage. He is a 5th year senior and he needed to be pulled in the 1st quarter against Mississippi State.
He was replaced by a freshman, Kody Burns. A freshman who revitalized the team and demanded respect from the Mississippi State Defense. He might have been figured out by the 3rd quarter but Cox was figured out before the game started.
Now Brandon did come back in the last drive and he looked good doing it, but that was against a prevent defense. He picked them apart until they got into a goal line set. At that point I think Burns should have come in. I think they should have had a Tim Tebow package where the running quarterback comes in to the goal line situations. This gives Auburn a chance to run the ball in, or have a play action pass.
It was 1st and goal from the 8. That means they just needed to average 2 yards a carry. I like those odds when Auburn ran for 200 yards in the game. When you pass 4 times from the 8 yard line there are too many variables. It is too crowded. Good chance of an interception. Good chance of a sack. Good chance of a holding call. Good chance for batted ball. If you run it 3 of 4 plays you cut down on the variables. A fumble is your worst night mare. Carl Stewart could have won that game and Kody Burns could have been a red Herring in the backfield.
