Tommy Tuberville Fired!

December 3rd, 2008 | by Ethan Jaynes |

Pat Dye with Tommy TubervilleTommy Tuberville Fired! Tubby is out! Tubby is gone! There will be a lot that will come out throughout the off season about what has been said and the moves that have been made over the last few days, but the main reason he is gone, is Nick Saban.

I said it in the last post. Nick Saban’s success, great success, enormous success at Alabama is a glaring fact that Auburn did not take advantage during the Tide probation. They had a few great seasons, but they are still number 2 in their own state.

I like to think that Pat Dye had a little to do with it. They let Tubby try the spread, but the Auburn faithful loves the run, and hated all of his banter about keeping the spread. I am still convinced that Auburn has great running backs, and a good O line. The defense has tons of talent. The new coach needs to come in and develop a power I QB that can manage the game. I think a good coach that runs that ball can win 9 games next season. The pieces are in place.

Please leave comments. Do you like that he was fired? What do you think will happen now? Who will be the next coach? Do you think it will be a smooth transition?

I’ll tell ya, man. I’m an Alabama graduate, and I’m SHOCKED that he got fired.

I mean I’ve heard of “what have you done for me lately?”…but this is ridiculous. So he wins 6 straight times over Alabama…which is just statistically ridiculous in its own right. So he loses 1 and is fired.

To me, that’s just stupid. And it shows absolutely no faith in your coach, whoever he is. He should be given a break with all he’s done there. Just my two cents.

I am glad that he was fired. We have been going through a series of “ok” seasons, except when we were screwed out of the National Chapionship. Auburn is not an “ok” football team or college. I thing they are exceptional. I agree with Ethanator1088. We are a running team that needs to settle down in the I formations and get things done!

I’ve heard Mrs. T’ville has been straying from the nest. Is there any truth to this?

OK…time for a little straight talk.

Auburn has consistently been the “number 2″ team in the state. The truth hurts, but the Auburn faithful made a decision when they were knee high to a grasshopper whether they would pull for the Tide or “that cow college”. Auburn will have some great years and think they have “arrived”, only to wake up and face the music…in this case, “Rammer Jammer”.

I have met Coach Tuberville several times and he seems to a very good man and I hate to see him leave, but what’s done is done. I agree Auburn is team known for the run (hence the NFL nickname running bach U) and we also need to develope and recruite quality QB’s that can be a double threat. I think the one Coach that can do this (I can’t believe I saying it because I hate him) is Steve Spurrier. I am a life long Auburn fan through the good times and bad (Doug Barfield years) and I think Spurrier would bring AU what it needs.

Alabama fans seem to have a short memory, because for the last 6 years I believe Alabama has been number 2 (and this statement has multiple meanings) in the state. You may not like Tuberville but he was more that just a good coach. He is a good man, under his leadership his players have higher grade point averages than most schools in the SEC including Alabama and overall his player don’t seem to get into the trouble that some schools seem to allow. For instance Alabama has 13 player arrested in the last 2 years under the wonderful leadership of Sabin, that something to be proud of.

As a life-long Alabama supporter, I have always thought Tuberville to be a very good coach. In my humble opinion, he’s always had to keep an eye on two people: Pat Dye and Bobby Lowder. Even though Lowder gave the final, somewhat gentle push that moved Dye out of coaching at Auburn, those two have moved in concert since. Dye was a problem for Terry Bowden. Dye and Lowder always lurked in the shadows for Tuberville - from 2003(maybe earlier) until this very day.

Tuberville beat UA six times in a row! He rubbed our noses in it, and why not? He beat the one team everybody wanted him to beat. That seems not to be good enough.

I was 13 years old in ‘69 when Alabama fans thought Coach Bryant was done. Look at what he did in the 70’s.

Tuberville is a good coach and, I believe, a good man. I hope he collects every cent of that $6 million. He deserves it. I hope he is offered a job as Head Coach at a first class institution (not insinuating that Auburn is not first class), and is very successful.

The SEC has lost a good coach and a good man. I wish him well.

silly comment from Big Al which does no favor for fans of Alabama.

As for the other post from Alabama graduate, fact is T got fired NOT because of the last game of the season but for the entire season. Frankly, I am glad. he made too many mistakes.

Well, Big Al, a classy comment from a typical Bama fan.

I am a life long Alabama fan and have ridden out the hard times. My freshman year at Bama was the first of the 6 losses at Auburn and so I am glad to finally have one. However, this is some straight unbiased talk about Tuberville.

I agree Tuberville is a good man, and is a great coach if you want to have winning seasons and do well. But in 10 years Tuberville has not produced the goods, meaning a National Championship. That is what Auburn wants more than anything is a clear, defined, unquestionable National Championship. Tuberville got very close once, but for whatever reason, screwed as it was, it didn’t happen. A head coach of a football program is the head manager of an entertainment business for a University. If Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, was brought in to make an award winning product for the company and he failed to do so for 10 years except getting close once…he would be fired. The same is the business decision that fired Tuberville. This is a decision above the Iron Bowl, it is about what Auburn wants ultimately and whether or not Tuberville can deliver that in the near future. I agree with the business decision. I also hope the best of luck to Auburn in their coach hunting….I hope they get a good one that will fire up this rivalry to a level we haven’t seen in years.

I too like Steve Spurrier at Auburn even though I hate his guts….I’m with you Ray Henderson!

    Roll Tide!

Correct if I am wrong AuburnAlumni, but wasn’t Auburn on probation for the 2004 season? Isn’t that why they were not allowed to go to even a bowl game, much less the national title game? Off subject I know, but I have been hearing this complaint for the past 4 years.

  13. By Team Tubs on Dec 4, 2008 | Reply

Weston - Auburn played in and won the Sugar Bowl in 2004, beating Virginia Tech 16-13. The reason Auburn wasn’t in the national title game that year was because of the ridiculous BCS formula that put OU in against USC instead of the Tigers. War Eagle!

    Again, just some straight talk…

This has always been a bitter rivalry, always will be.
The short term memory seems to side with the Auburn faithful. Believe me, every Bama fan knows the recent history of 6 straight losses. How could we forget with the catchy slogans, t-shirts, videos, blogs, etc…”Fear the Thumb”, and on and on. When Bama was rolling up 9 straight victories over Auburn from 1973-1981, you didn’t have all of the cutesy slogans, in your face taunting, that the Auburn faithful have exacted these last 6 years. Sure, there is always smack talk, but not near the level of recent years. The reason that Bama fans don’t run around in circles and wet themselves over beating Auburn goes back to a Coach Bryant quote to his players, “When you score a touch down or make a big play, don’t run around slinging snot, act like you’ve been there before”.
Bama has been here before, alot, and they will be here a lot more.
Ray, can you name the 13 Bama players arrested? You were quick with that stat…a little too quick.
Also, can you back up your GPA claim with facts and tell us where you got the info?
The “cow college” quote is also from the Bear, not a “silly comment”. It was based on the predominant curriculum at Auburn in those days.
The Rammer Jammer comment was mine (I’ll give you that one…but come on…”Fear the Thumb”??)

Oh ok, sorry. Auburn was on probation that year, but I suppose they were taken off during the season. Thanks for clearing that up for me Team Tubs. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against Auburn in that argument. I always pull for Auburn when they are playing anyone besides Alabama so I would have loved to see them go to the title game. I have just been hearing that for a long time and wanted to find out what really happened. Thanks!

    Ray Henderson,
Lets not talk about just the previous 6 lets talk about overall years…Bama owns Auburn in the seris…Bama owns Auburn is recruiting…Bama owns Auburn is SEC titles…Bama owns Auburn in National titles…Bama owns Auburn in Bowl games….Bama owns Auburn in Bowl victories…Bama owns Auburn in EVERYTHING…You WILL always be #2 in the state! GUESS WHAT?? this is only Saban’s 2nd year and we are going to the Sugar Bowl!! Its only gonna get worst for your tigers from here on out…Oh and by the way you said Auburn players have the highest GPA than most…well you **** sure didn’t get your education from there…you spelled Saban’s name wrong and you always said “that something to be proud of”
