Does Urban Meyer “Get” Twitter

Posted on 19 May 2009 by Ryan Morgan

Does Urban Meyer “Get” Twitter. The Bull Gator said, “No one needs to know what you are doing at that exact moment of the day.”  While I can see his point (some people Tweet about some very inane things sometimes), I don’t think he sees the whole picture.  Tweeting about what you’re doing at a given time can serve a purpose.

For example, he quotes Meyer’s Tweet which says “Heading to a quick staff meeting.”

then makes the comment “Gee! Thanks coach! In the future, you can keep those updates to yourself.”

I can understand why he might think that this is useless, but you can be quite sure that there are those who follow Meyer on Twitter who are closer to him who see that and think ‘ok, I’ll just have to wait to call him later.’  Given, the vast majority of those following him are most likely just Gators fans, but to some his updates could be very helpful.  On top of that, he does not just Tweet his status, but articles and messages to the other UF sports teams.  I could be a bit biased, because I also Tweet, but I do not share The Bull Gator’s sentiments. Tell us what you think. Do you find the following helpful?

(Editor’s Note: I agree with the Bull Gator :-) , but I see Ryan Morgan’s point. )

To be fair, I did also say he does provide some updates that are valuable and I can see the point in the them.

The reason why I still don’t see the point in items such as “heading into a staff meeting” or when other people say they use it so people know where they are is because that’s exactly what voice mail and email are for. People are using Twitter to say things like “I’m at the movies” so their friends know why they aren’t answering the phone or responding to an email. But what happened to just leaving a message or waiting for someone to write you back? Why do we need to know exactly why we can’t reach someone?

With Meyer’s situation, that’s my point. I get that there may be others closer to him that may like to know what he’s up to, I still don’t get why they can’t just call, get his voice message, and think “okay, he must be busy, I’ll leave a message and he can get back to me.”

I have nothing against people who use Twitter. The more I learn about it, the more I realize how it can be valuable, but the need for everyone to know exactly why someone isn’t getting back the them right that second is a little much to me. Sometimes I don’t answer the phone or respond to an email simply because I don’t want to. Does that mean I should be putting “currently ignoring contact” on my Twitter page?
