Urban to replace Urban

Posted on 27 December 2009 by Andrew Rosin

Urban to replace Urban

I was ready to call this the end of an era. I was ready to eulogize the Gator era as a thematic sequel to the U. This event was stunning. Urban Meyer, who even the most ardent Gator hater would consider to be one of the greats of the game, was done with coaching.

And I could sympathize. Trying to balance family with coaching a school with massive expectations and a target on their back could burn out anybody. It’s happened to many greats along the way as well. So as such? I was going to manage as much eloquence as my right-brained blogging side could muster.

But like any good bowl game distraction, this story has mutated. Apparently? Urban Meyer isn’t going to be coaching for an indefinite amount of time. But as I type this, he expects to coach in 2010. So yeah, I guess.

But what does this mean? Well, the recruiting class is screwed up for 2010. Steve Addazio is to 2010′s preseason hype like Jonathan Crompton was for 2009. A running punchline. If this actually extends into 2010? No Florida fan will be happy.

But you know what else this means? I wasted 205 words on a non-story. Thanks, Florida. Thanks.

Florida vs. Cincinnati, 2009 Sugar Bowl, Prediction Pick

Florida vs. Cincinnati, 2009 Sugar Bowl, Prediction Pick

My instinct is that this will be a tremendous sendoff for the Gator senior class. You have a team in flux that just might be coached by a Bill Doba impersonator. (Look it up.) And this team got to unbeaten by a lot more crook than anybody in the class of unbeaten. That being said? I’ll save my final analysis for the end of the post. Maybe I’ll change my mind.

After all, while the numbers the Brandon Spikes led defense put up this year were mostly tremendous? The non-Alabama team that gave Florida the largest amount of trouble was a high-powered passing attack with a big-armed quarterback. And if you think Arkansas’ offense is good? The Bearcats are better. 6th in scoring, 6th in Passing, 6th in total offense. Pike to Gilyard is too good to be cast asunder by the coaching change.

And if you think Carlos Dunlap is going to change that? You may be sorely mistaken. Cincy may be flawed? But it has nothing to do with their offensive line. 11 sacks allowed all year. Steve Addazio is going to have to put up some points if they don’t want to be embarrassed.

Here’s why Florida should be fine. In the last month of the season, Cincy got gashed for 45, 36, and 44 points. And in two of those games? They had to make furious rallys to win. And as this is going to be the last moment Tim Tebow will have as a collegian so darn the torpedoes, he’s gonna leave everything out on the field? That bodes well. Brandon James would help? But they should be fine.

The X-Factor for this game? Isaiah Pead. He is the Bearcats leading rusher. He gets rolling and the Bearcats have a real chance at getting the co-National Championship. (YOU HEARD ME!) But, suffice it to say, it doesn’t look like a super hyper mega action force blowout. Just something like Florida 38, Cincinnati 27.

The perfect gift for the hardcore non-Gator based college football fan…

The perfect gift for the hardcore non-Gator based college football fan…

My former tag team partner at the Grand National Championships is someone who also enjoyed the Tim Tebow whimsy of his Sophomore run for the Heisman trophy. It was a simpler time after all. we had never seen The Dark Knight, Jay Leno was a nice way for old people to go to bed, and Tiger Woods?

The less said the better.

Anyway, the worm turned on Tebow for my ex-tag partner during last year’s national championship game. You remember, when Marty Brenneman said breathlessly “I’M YOU ARE ABLE TO SPEND JUST FIVE MINUTES WITH TEBOW YOUR LIFE WILL BE CHANGED FOR THE BETTER!” or some such nonsense. For you see? My tag partner is someone who is a hardcore Boomer Sooner.

And as such? I know what he’s getting for Christmas…

Florida vs. Alabama, Prediction Pick The SEC Championshippening

Florida vs. Alabama, Prediction Pick The SEC Championshippening

Here we go. The match-up that everybody saw coming. Florida v. Alabama. Ingram vs. Tebow. Man Mountain Cody vs. Spikes. Jorts v. Bama Bangs.

Who does the man John Hill called an “uninformed fricking idiot” think will win? Follow me.

Well, we all know the story coming into the game. How will Florida overcome the pass rush loss of Drunk Carlos Dunlap? And I have to say, despite the divinity of the man called Jermaine Cunningham?  There’s a small problem. Greg McElroy with time will be a good game manager. This will put undue pressue on Joe Haden to lock down Julio Jones.

And even then? Some combination of Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson should be able to move the ball. And Javier Arenas? He is someone who can change games with pass coverage and punt returns. And with Renaldo at his side? Saban is someone who is truly Dangeresque.

But Florida? The case for Florida is based on two reasons. One, it’s rare that you have such a veteran team at the high stakes win or die aspects. And at this point? It won’t matter how much you win by. Nobody’s going to break a pompon over your head for a one point win.

And Aaron Hernandez is a mid-range force of nature. He will be necessary for Florida to win? You know what else will be necessary? The Tebow who earned praise for deeds instead of words. His passing game has atrophied without Harvin.

But that being said? It’s a difficult prediction pick. Florida is favored by five and a half. And that makes no sense on paper. Alabama looks like the better team. They should win and cover.

However? And considering the year we’re in and my lack of a Florida homerism, this is a bitter pill to swallow. I am saying Florida 24 Alabama 17. My head says don’t bet against the Tebow in a one game playoff.

But I’m watching the game with the mute button. I’m breaking out the indie rock on the iPod.

Last Week: 3-5
Overall: 48-38

2009 SEC Championship, Alabama vs Florida, Prediction Pick

Posted on 24 November 2009 by Ethan Jaynes

2009 SEC Championship, Alabama vs Florida, Prediction Pick. I found the perfect video that explains exactly what will happen in the SEC Championship game. In the SEC, the coaches are larger than life. They are movie stars. This game will come down to just 2 people. Meyer vs Saban. Do not pay attention to the pundits that want to include the “players” into the equation. Urban and Nick have huge egos, but that is only because they finally realized that it really is all about them.

As the video clearly illustrates, I am picking the Gators to win by Eleventy Billion. ( really I pick the Gators to win by 13. I know it’s early, but barring huge injuries, I stand by the pick)

I wouldn’t say this to Brandon Spikes face but…

Posted on 02 November 2009 by Andrew Rosin

It’s hard to be a bad man in real life when you use heel professional wrestling tactics. Dirty deeds cheapen the rep. Watch for yourself…

See? You cannot abide these tactics.

UPDATE: Brandon Spikes is suspended for a half of football. Versus Vanderbilt. He sure learned his lesson.

Florida vs Mississippi State, Prediction Pick, 2009

Florida vs Mississippi State, Prediction Pick, 2009

Florida was lucky to come from behind last week rallying to nip Arkansas 23-20. It almost seems like Urban Meyer is babying Tim Tebow back into his explosive self. Look for the training wheels to be off this weekend. Tim Tebow will finish this game with 400 all-purpose yards and probably watch the fourth quarter from the Gator sidelines. The #1 team in the country will definitely come out screaming this week and the poor victim is a Bulldog in the form of Mississippi State.

In an uncharacteristic performance against the Razorbacks, the Gator offense dropped three passes, had four turnovers, allowed six sacks, and really struggled in the red zone. These statistics will have Meyer on overdrive at practice all week.

Mississippi State is coming off of a 27-6 win over Middle Tennessee last week. They should be motivated to play Florida. All signs would say that they can keep this game close.

With Florida playing a great game with a chip on their shoulders, I smell a blowout. B-L-O-W-O-U-T…

Florida… 44-13

Florida vs LSU, Prediction Pick, 2009

Posted on 08 October 2009 by Ethan Jaynes

Florida vs LSU, Prediction Pick, 2009
Is this, in fact, the biggest game of 2009? According to the rankings it is, as these are the two highest-ranked teams to play this year.
Yet this game has no real implications in the SEC races, since (4) LSU and (1) Florida are in different divisions. While a loss could hurt either’s chances of winning their respective divisions, they could play again in the SEC championship game. So we may learn nothing Saturday night other than: 1. It’s still loud in Baton Rouge during night games and 2. The winning team was better than the losing team on October 10, 2009.

If Florida wins, this game doesn’t matter because we expect them to and LSU hasn’t been playing very well anyway. Worse, even if they lose, Florida fans can say Tim Tebow didn’t play, or was playing hurt two weeks after a bad concussion. Thus, do BCS voters take that into account when ranking Florida if they lose on Saturday?

This could cause BCS chaos, people! Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!

The key matchup isn’t Florida’s offense against LSU’s defense. It’s whether LSU’s offense can get away with doing just enough not to lose again against Florida’s defense. The Gators don’t suck on that side of the ball like, say, everyone else LSU has played.

The Tigers’ offense has shown all the hallmarks of having a quarterback who just isn’t ready to manage a game yet. LSU is almost totally ineffective in the red zone, can’t get its running backs going because opposing defenses know to stop them first and has made a few plays through the air, but missed a lot of them too. Make no mistake, Jordan Jefferson is going to figure it out any day now, but he hasn’t yet, and that’s not a good sign for Saturday.

Here’s how the Tigers can win: I’ll admit it’s kind of obvious, but either Keiland Williams or Charles Scott is going to have to step up, along with the offensive line. Not because they’re the key (obviously Gary Crowton’s sparing use of his two stud backs so far shows they aren’t), but because it will open things up for the real playmakers: Brandon LaFell and Terrance Toliver. Those guys can beat Florida’s DB’s and cause all kinds of hell for Florida’s defense. That is, if Jefferson can find them consistently.

Frankly, it’s more likely they’ll get open than Florida’s defense suddenly letting Scott and Williams waltz through the front seven like they’re Jim Brown and O.J. Simpson before he cut two people’s heads off.

OK, OK, fine. Let’s talk about Tebow and Florida’s offense. LSU happens to be the best defense Florida has faced. And if John Brantley is in there instead of Tebow, it’s going to  be a massive disruption to Florida’s running game because it relies so heavily on Tebow or the threat of Tebow. He’s like a nuclear missile. The threat of him is nearly as scary as actually using him.
Don’t forget that Urban Meyer’s offense worked with a less-athletic quarterback (Alex Smith) and they won a national championship with Chris Leak taking the majority of the snaps, so Brantley might actually enhance things both on the ground and through the air. Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey are going to have to be huge though and Florida’s going to need to find a fullback for at least one game.

Notice how I didn’t mention any of the receivers because they might as well have been anonymous through the first five weeks of this season. I wonder if Tebow even knew their names before the concussion, because he certainly doesn’t now.

Look, even with a foggy Tim Tebow or a full-strength John Brantley, Florida is better than LSU at almost every position, in virtually every matchup and in all three phases of the game. LSU’s only shot is a hall-of-fame defensive effort, a crowd on par with Ohio State fans at this year’s USC game and efficiency on offense that hasn’t been displayed yet. Doesn’t look good, does it?

Florida is a seven point favorite at the moment, and given all the issues surrounding their personnel, it’s hard to see them covering, though they should still beat LSU.

My prediction: both teams start slow and LSU actually takes an early lead. Florida then proceeds to suck the life out of the stadium by matriculating the ball down the field, playing solid defense the rest of the way, and winning a close game. Florida wins but doesn’t cover the seven points.
